On a trip to Bogota several years back, I began hearing about this incredible group from Medellin that blended Colombian music with jazz called Puerto Candelaria. From the first listen I was hooked. Pianist, composer, and bandleader Juan Diego Valencia inventively fuses modern musical elements with traditional Colombian rhythms and melodies. His compositions are quite sophisticated, yet brimming with humor and accessibility.
Mocking the overly produced and glamorized music videos of so many pop stars, Muerta (Dead) showcases the band in a humorously produced clip. Incidentally, most of their music is instrumental. This is the only piece I’ve heard with vocals.
Here they are playing bottles of colored liquid. Including milk.
This video collage captures the true joy of Puerto Candeleria’s concerts. Almost like a circus. Truly an example of music that pushes the envelope but still resonates with the public. No stodgy pretenses. Just great music and great fun.
