Attracting New Audiences

Each day this week, The Savvy Musician Blog will unveil a new solution to our second Challenge.  We asked music students from around the globe to respond to the following:

Attracting New Audiences

Classical and jazz performances often appeal to only a small segment of our population, typically aficionados.  Design a chamber music experience (4 players or less) that will engage new and untraditional audiences.  Describe your target demographic(s), why they will be interested, the event design, and marketing strategy.

Here are some reasons this question is beneficial:

  1. This challenge forces us to consider what audiences want; too often, a step neglected by schooled musicians.
  2. Attracting new audiences may not simply necessitate more aggresive and targeted marketing campaigns. Instead, it can require entirely new kinds of events.
  3. It is essential for us to determine powerful strategies for engaging new audiences if we wish to keep our music alive and healthy in years to come.
  4. Attracting (and delighting) new audiences helps not only your group, but increases the demand for quality music in general.

All readers are encouraged to answer this challenge for themselves.  What can you do to attract new audiences beyond the usual suspects?  What would such an event sound/look/feel like?  Where will it take place?  Who is the target audience?  How do you plan to entice prospective listeners to give it a shot?
